SEO For Nonprofits FAQ
What is SEO for Nonprofits?
SEO for nonprofits is a specialized approach to Search Engine Optimization that focuses on increasing the online visibility of nonprofit organizations. This helps them reach a wider audience, attract more donations, and fulfill their mission more effectively.
Why is SEO for Nonprofits Important?
SEO for nonprofits is crucial because it helps these organizations reach their target audience without the need for large advertising budgets. Effective SEO strategies can significantly increase online donations and volunteer sign-ups.
How Does SEO for Nonprofits Differ from Regular SEO?
While the core principles are the same, SEO for nonprofits often involves a more mission-driven approach. The focus is not just on driving traffic but on attracting an audience that is genuinely interested in supporting the cause.
What Are the Key Components of SEO for Nonprofits?
The key components of SEO for nonprofits include keyword research tailored to the cause, on-page and off-page optimization, and quality backlink building. These elements help improve the website’s ranking and visibility on search engines.
How Do You Measure the Success of SEO for Nonprofits?
Success in SEO for nonprofits can be measured through various metrics such as organic traffic, donor conversion rates, and the level of engagement on social media platforms.
Search changed.
Getting found didn't.
Your customers used to type into a search bar. Now they ask ChatGPT, scan Google's AI Overview, or get a synthesized answer from Perplexity — and most never click through. We make sure your business is the answer they see, regardless of where they're asking.
Trusted by brands and nonprofits worldwide
Six acronyms. One job: get your business found.
The industry hasn't agreed on a single name yet — agencies, publishers, and tool vendors all use different terms for the same emerging discipline. Here's what each one actually means.
| Term | Where it shows up | What it optimizes for |
|---|---|---|
| SEO Search Engine Optimization | Google, Bing — the traditional blue links | Ranking organically on the search results page. Still the largest source of qualified traffic for most businesses. |
| AEO Answer Engine Optimization | Featured snippets, voice search, "People Also Ask" boxes | Getting your content lifted directly into the answer box — often above the regular results. Short, structured, question-and-answer formatted content wins here. |
| GEO Generative Engine Optimization | ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Gemini | Becoming a trusted source the AI cites when it synthesizes an answer. Depth, authority, and citations across the open web matter most. |
| LLMO Large Language Model Optimization | The same chat assistants — focused on entity recognition | A technical subset of GEO. Making sure the model understands who you are, what you do, and that your brand mentions are consistent across the web it learned from. |
| AIO AI Overviews | Specifically Google's AI summary at the top of results | A specific surface, not a separate practice. Pages already ranking in Google's top 10 are heavily favored — which means strong traditional SEO is the prerequisite. |
| AI SEO Sometimes called AISO | The umbrella covering all of the above | The modern, unified discipline. What most thoughtful agencies actually mean when they say any of these terms. |
If someone tries to sell you one of these as a completely separate service from the others — be skeptical. They share roughly 80% of the same underlying work.
The honest version: it's all one practice now. The fundamentals — clear writing, real authority, technically sound site, accurate entity signals — feed every channel. The acronyms just describe different surfaces where that work pays off.
What we actually do for you
Three workstreams. They overlap on purpose — that's where the leverage is.
Classic SEO, done right
The traditional work that still drives the majority of qualified traffic for most businesses — and that AI engines lean on heavily.
- Technical audit & site speed
- Keyword & competitive research
- On-page optimization
- Internal linking & site architecture
- Local SEO & Google Business Profile
- Backlink building & digital PR
GEO, LLMO & AI Overviews
The newer layer: making sure your business gets cited inside ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, and Gemini.
- Entity & schema markup
- Authority-building content clusters
- Citation tracking across LLMs
- llms.txt & AI crawler readiness
- Reddit, YouTube & community presence
- Brand mention consistency
AEO & structured content
The middle layer: featured snippets, voice search, AI Overview citations, and "People Also Ask" — wins you can capture quickly.
- FAQ & HowTo schema
- Question-first content design
- Answer-ready formatting
- Voice search optimization
- Featured snippet targeting
- Content refresh & expansion
Who this is — and isn't — for
We're founder-led and selective. Honesty up front saves everyone time.
A good fit
- Independent businesses serious about owning their category
- Service businesses tired of paying for ads to get every lead
- Nonprofits that need visibility but don't have an in-house SEO
- Companies who've watched AI cut into their organic traffic
- Founders who want to stop guessing what's working
- Anyone whose customers are now searching inside ChatGPT
Probably not a fit
- Anyone shopping for "we'll rank you in ChatGPT in 30 days"
- Businesses unwilling to invest in real, sourceable content
- Teams looking for a junior to crank out blog posts cheaply
- Brands expecting overnight results — SEO is a 6–12 month build
- Anyone whose product or service isn't yet defined
A simple four-step build
No mystery. Same process whether you're optimizing for Google, ChatGPT, or both.
Audit & baseline
Where you rank today on Google, what AI engines say about you, and where the gaps are. You see exactly where we're starting from.
Strategy & priorities
The 5–10 things we'd do first, ranked by impact and effort. Not a 100-line spreadsheet — a real plan you can read in ten minutes.
Build & ship
Technical fixes, content, schema, entity signals, authority-building. We do the work; you stay in the loop without being in the weeds.
Measure & iterate
Monthly plain-English reporting. Organic traffic, AI citations, conversions. What's working gets more; what isn't gets cut.
Why work with us, specifically
John Frydman
25 years doing SEO. Started in the late 1990s as an early web pioneer — founded one of the first online travel agencies and spent two decades watching how search actually works, from the era of meta keywords through Panda, Penguin, Hummingbird, BERT, the helpful-content updates, and now AI Overviews.
International brand experience. Worked on digital strategy for MGM, PBS, Air France and independent organizations. Different industries, different markets — same underlying principles applied at scale.
AI-fluent, by practice. Digismart also runs AI workshops, AI audits, and AI automations for businesses and nonprofits. Working inside these tools every week is how we know what ChatGPT, Claude, and Perplexity actually do with content — why they cite some sources, ignore others, and what that means for your visibility.
The combination is what matters. Two decades of compounded SEO judgment plus hands-on AI fluency lets us build something most engagements can't: a coherent content engine where every page does double duty — ranking on Google, getting cited by AI, and ultimately driving qualified buyers to your door. That's the outcome we're hired for.
What people ask before signing on
Is SEO dead now that ChatGPT exists?
No — and anyone telling you that is either selling you something else, or they don't read the data. Google still handles the vast majority of search queries globally, and AI engines like ChatGPT and Perplexity heavily rely on the same web that Google indexes to build their answers. What's changed is that ranking #1 is no longer the only outcome that matters. Getting cited in an AI answer is just as valuable now — sometimes more. The work to get both is largely the same.
What's the actual difference between SEO, AEO, GEO, and LLMO?
About 80% of the underlying work is identical: clear writing, technical site health, authority signals, accurate entity data, structured markup. The differences are mostly about which surface you're optimizing for — Google's blue links (SEO), Google's answer boxes (AEO), AI-generated responses (GEO/LLMO), or Google AI Overviews (AIO). Most reputable agencies — us included — are doing all of them at once and just calling it "SEO" or "AI SEO" depending on the audience.
How long until I see results?
Some wins are fast. Technical fixes, schema markup, and AEO formatting can show measurable improvement in 30–60 days. Real, defensible organic ranking growth — the kind that compounds for years — typically takes 6 to 12 months. AI citation tracking is too new to promise specific timelines, but most clients start seeing brand mentions in LLM responses within 90 days of doing the foundational work properly.
Can you guarantee I'll rank #1 — or get cited by ChatGPT?
No, and you should be wary of anyone who does. Both Google and the major LLMs are deliberately opaque about how they rank and select content, and that changes constantly. What we can commit to is doing the work that's been proven to move both surfaces — and being honest with you about what's working and what isn't, every month.
Do I need to pick between SEO and AI SEO?
You really don't. They're the same work pointed at two outputs. A site that ranks well on Google is also the kind of site AI engines trust enough to cite. Anyone telling you to abandon traditional SEO to chase "AI SEO" is following hype, not data.
What does this cost?
Engagements are scoped to the business. A small local service business with one location is a different size of project than a national nonprofit or a multi-product brand. We'll quote you flat fees upfront after a short discovery call — no surprise invoices, no hourly billing, no long-term contracts. Most clients land between $1,500 and $5,000 a month depending on scope.
What if I already have an in-house marketer or another agency?
That's common, and often a good thing. We frequently work alongside existing teams — typically as the strategic and technical SEO/AI-visibility layer while in-house staff handle content production and day-to-day marketing. Tell us what you have; we'll tell you where we'd add the most value.
Why Digismart specifically, and not a larger agency?
Larger agencies tend to sell process. We sell judgment — 25 years of compounded judgment, applied directly by the founder, with AI fluency layered on top. That's why our roster includes both Fortune 500 brands and independent nonprofits. We're not trying to be everywhere; we're trying to do this particular job better than anyone of our size.
See where you stand today — across Google and AI.
A 30-minute call. We'll look at your current organic visibility, check how AI engines describe you right now, and tell you the three things that would move the needle fastest. No pitch deck.
